This project "99orte" is an idea and a realization from the video instalation artist Kai Fobbe. This was the first collaboration work between Jean Laurent Sasportes and Kai Fobbe. Other works etablished this collaboration, as the stage scenery of "Looking for Kenji". Some new ideas are at work and will soon be realized, as 99orte for Manhattan, Zurich and Tokyo.

Kai Fobbes Videos inszenieren sich im Spannungsfeld zwischen Schein und Sein. Ihre durchkomponierte Bildsprache bricht Sehgewohnheiten durch technische oder dramaturgische Verfremdungen. Am Ende des Prozesses stehen verschlüsselte Bilder. In Screenplays wie Traumata und Triptychon ohne Titel bleiben Figuren in nicht endenwollenden Handlungen gefangen. In 99 Orte übersetzt ein Tänzer Längen- und Breitengrade in Gebärdensprache. Sind die ersten Werke von reduzierten, fast rohen Bildern und dokumentarischem Material geprägt, stellen Fobbes jüngste Filme traumartige Situationen dar, die an tänzerische Choreographien erinnern, und zeigen den Künstler als verspielt-ironischen Regisseur zwischen Wirklichkeit und Wunderland.

Kai Fobbe's videos are staged in the tension between appearance and reality. Their composed pictorial language breaks viewing habits with technical or dramaturgical alienation. The result of that procedure is a variety of encrypted images. In screenplays as Traumata and Triptychon ohne Titel (Triptychon untitled), the characters are trapped in seemingly endless actions. In 99 locations, a dancer translates latitudes and longitudes into sign language. As the early works are characterized by reduced, almost crude pictures and documentary material, Fobbe's more recent films are dream-like situations reminding of choreographies and depict the artist as a playfully ironic director dwelling between reality and Wonderland.

Koordinatensysteme zur Bestimmung der Position auf der Erdoberfläche sind schon seit vielen Jahrhunderten im Einsatz. Die moderne Gebärdensprache ist ein vergleichsweise junges Zeichensystem.
Die Videoinstallation „99 Orte“ von Kai Fobbe verknüpft beide Systeme in einer 99-teiligen Performance. Ein Mann tritt vor die Kamera. In Gebärdensprache verrät er seinen jeweiligen Standort.

Jean Laurent Sasportes, langjähriger Tänzer beim Tanztheater Pina Bausch, verkörpert hier verschmitzt den mysteriösen Kenner einer Region, die entdeckt werden will. Landschaftlich, architektonisch und mit vielen Zeugnissen der frühen Industriekultur.
Die an 99 Orten entstandenen Videoclips bilden eine Art ertanztes GPS-System. Ein ganz realer Guide für Kulturinteressierte und Reiselustige, verschlüsselt in der Gebärdensprache. Ein Bild, das der Betrachter scheinbar kennt und das ihn dennoch irritiert.

99 locations: concept
For many centuries, coordinate systems have been used to determine the position on the surface of the Earth. Modern sign language is a comparatively recent system. The video project "99 Locations" by Kai Fobbe links both systems by means of a 99-part performance. A man stands in front of a camera and illustrates his respective location in sign language.

Jean Laurent Sasportes, long-standing dancer at the Tanztheater Pina Bausch, mischievously embodies the mysterious expert of an area that wants to be discovered, especially its landscapes, architecture and industrial heritage.
These video clips that were created at 99 locations form a danced GPS system. A very real guide for people interested in culture and travelling encoded in sign language. An image that is seemingly familiar to the spectator but yet confusing.
"99 Locations" is a piece of art for everybody to download.
The video clips are also available as app. Art as a mass product – only a few clicks away for everybody. Art as a unique, speculative product. The artist Kai Fobbe will personally create a movie with the latitudes and longitudes of your choice.
