Dance-theatre at the service of science vulgarisation

Introduction:

After I graduated in 1971, I found myself in the difficult situation to have to decide which kind of university studies would I follow.
Movie director was very seducing to me, but as well as, journalism, or scientific research. Psychiatry and mind trouble was also on my list. Being curious for many things opened my choice range, but overall was bringing many question without answer.

It is finally the influence of my mathematic teacher Mr. Thierry Germain in Casablanca which brought me to apply for the first year of mathematics, physics and chemistry at the Science University of St. Charles in Marseille.
The two first years went more or less without trouble, but I started to notice that the teaching was kind of too « abstract » for my needs. I suppose that because of my weak ground basics, I often felt the need of « picture » to get a better representation of what was taught to us.
When I told my professor or his assistant about my difficulty, he answered to me:
« Mister Sasportes, of you have such a need of picture, why don’t you do art »
Another way to let me understand that Maths and Physics were not so much my trip, and that I should maybe choice another orientation..
I quickly forgot this joke, but I decide to try the pharmacie university with the intention to specialise in oceanography…

Many detour for finally, two years later stop my university studies and through myself into modern dance. To the great displeasure of my father who was all ready seeing his son behind the desk of nicely lucrative drug store.

We were in 1974 and I was a little older then 19 years old. Why modern dance and what happened till I got my engagement as solo dancer at the Pina Bausch dancetheatre company is a long story that I will not tell now here. I will jump a few years to bring us to 2007 in Japan.
Japanese culture always attracted me and it is during ma first visit to Japan on tour with the Pina Bausch company in 1986 that fell in love with this country.
The success of our company gave us the opportunity to travel and tour through Japan almost every two years till the sad death of Pina. Our tours were always for me the chance to discover this country and meet a lot of people, as well among the artist world as among the public.
One of those meeting has been for me particularly important; mister Takashi Ito and his wife, the choregrapher Naoko Ito did contact me in 1997 to propose me to teach some dance workshop at the Dance Academy that he and his wife grounded in Tokyo, the Session House.
This is how I started to teach in Tokyo from the summer 1998. I could regularly spend each summer one or two months teaching dance and choreography workshops and performing on stage with musicians. First at the Session House and soon also at some other places and other towns.
Along the way my trips and my meetings, I got more opportunities to teach and propose my work. That brought me to travel and return between Europe and Japan about twice a year. This is, now in 2020, still part of my professional life and I appreciate it very much.


It is in Japan in 2008 that I did my first project involving dance and science together. I have to admit that it was not under my initiative and at this time I was miles away to think that this field will become one of my favorite.

It is only ten years later in 2018, that my meeting with Barbara Ruediger and our work about Ludwig Boltzmann, will give form to the project     « Science dances »

La danse théâtre au service de la vulgarisation de la science

Introduction:

Après avoir obtenu mon baccalauréat en 1971, je me suis trouvé dans la difficile situation d’avoir á décider dans quelles études j’allais me lancer.
Le métier de metteur en scène m’attirait beaucoup mais tout autant celui de vétérinaire, le journalisme, et la recherche scientifique. La psychiatrie et les troubles de l’esprit m’intéressaient aussi beaucoup. Ma curiosité pour beaucoup de choses ne me laissait que l’embarras du choix, mais me posait surtout beaucoup de questions sans réponse.

C’est finalement l’influence de mon professeur de mathématiques Mr. Thierry Germain au Lycée de Casablanca qui m’a amenée á m’inscrire en première année de « Maths-Physique-Chimie » á la faculté de Saint-Charles á Marseille.
Mes deux premières années se passèrent plus ou moins bien mais je me heurtais á un enseignement pour moi un peu trop « abstrait », et peut-être par manque de bases solides, je ressentais souvent le besoin d ‘« images » pour mieux me représenter et comprendre ce qui m’était enseigné.
Lorsque je faisais part de ce besoin á mon professeur de mathématiques ou á son assistant, il me répondaient: « Monsieur Sasportes, si vous avez tant besoin d’images, faites donc de l’art ».
Une façon de me dire que n’étant par particulièrement doué pour ce genre d’études, il me vaudrait peut-être mieux essayer quelque chose de plus á ma portée..
Une boutade que j’ai rapidement oubliée mais qui m’a amenée á m’inscrire en deuxième année de pharmacie avec l’intention de me spécialiser en océanographie…
Beaucoup de tours et de détours pour finalement, deux années plus tard arrêter mes études universitaires et me lancer dans la danse moderne.. Au grand dam de mon pauvre papa qui lui rêvait de voir son fils bien installé au comptoir d’une pharmacie bien lucrative.

Nous étions en 1974 et j’avais un peu plus de 19 ans. Pourquoi la danse moderne, et ce qui c’est passé jusqu’á que je sois engagé comme danseur soliste dans la compagnie de danse-théâtre de Pina Bausch est une longue histoire que je ne vais pas raconter ici.
Je vais sauter quelques années pour nous amener en 2007 au Japon.

J’ai toujours eu un grand attrait pour la culture japonaise et c’est lors de ma première visite au Japon, en tournée avec la compagnie Tanztheatre de Pina Bausch en 1986, que je tombais « amoureux » de ce pays. Le succès du Tanztheatre au Japon nous a permis d’y retourner régulièrement environ tous les deux ans jusqu’á la triste disparition de Pina. Nos tournées étaient pour moi une merveilleuse occasion de découvrir le pays et de rencontrer beaucoup de personnes tant du milieu artistique que du public.
Une rencontre fut particulièrement importante pour mon « futur japonais »; monsieur Takashi Ito, et sa femme, la chorégraphe Naoko Ito m’ont contacté en 1997 pour me proposer de donner des stages dans l’académie de danse que lui et sa femme avait établi á Tokyo, - la Session House. - 
C’est ainsi que á partir de l’été 1998, je commençais á enseigner á Tokyo. Je passais ainsi un á deux mois chaque été á proposer mes stages de danse et de chorégraphie tout d’abord á la Session House de Takashi et Naoko Ito, puis aussi dans d’autres lieux et villes. Au fur et á mesure des mes voyages et de mes rencontres s’ajoutèrent d’autres possibilités de proposer mon travail et j’en vins á faire l’aller-retour avec le Japon en moyenne deux fois par an.
Cette relation avec le Japon et les japonais continue encore de nos jours en 2020 et j’en suis profondément heureux.

C’est au Japon, en 2008 que je commençais mon premier projet associant la danse-théâtre et les sciences. Je dois avouer que ce ne fut pas sur mon initiative et que á ce moment, j’étais loin de me douter que ce domaine allait devenir un de mes domaines de créativité privilégié.
Ce n’est que une dizaine d’années plus tard ( en 2018 ) que ma rencontre avec la professeur Barbara Ruediger et notre travail sur Ludwig Boltzmann, allaient donner corps et âme au Projet « La Science danse ».
